Tulips.

Another monoprint, tulips this time.  I applied the monoprints with matte medium and then went over the open part on the left hand page with clear gesso.  There is no medium at all on top of the monoprinted paper as I was careful to avoid getting any on the paper....just copy paper, nothing special.  Then I used watercolours over top of that:... french ultramarine, alizarin crimson and cadmium yellow pale.  More experimenting here: I'm trying to mix greens and neutrals from the pure pigments.  Still not thrilled about the watercolours on top of the clear gesso, but it is so much better than anything else I've tried. And admittedly they were more of a wash here than anything else so they really don't have the oomph they might need to stand up to the gesso. I'll keep experimenting.
Here are the separate pages:

So today I am going to try some more lemons.  We'll see.....  well, and then you'll see!!!

  1. I love where the 2 tulips meet...and the jar they are in...lovely. I just read in Brommer's "watercolor & collage" book that he uses thinned matte medium as his adhesive. He says that it has to be really thinned down w/ water and then you can paint w/ watercolor over it easily...gonna have to give it a try! cc

  2. Lovely tulips Marny. Your work is getting to be really wonderful All the hard fun playing is paying off. I wish I would understand the mono-printing technique that you are referring to. Could you guide me to a source book or a video?

  3. Hi Jarina. A book to get at the library is Monotype by Julia Ayres. Lots of information about different kinds of printing there. And if you don't already have it, (and if you don't, rush out and get it!) The Painted Quilt by Laura and Linda Kemshall is a great read containing all kinds of wonderful and tempting ideas and inspiration! And of course, there is always YouTube. Hope this helps.
